Session Beer Poll?

Yes, "Drink Craft Beer" has put up a TwtPoll asking "What is your abv% cut-off for a 'session beer?'" Choices are 4%, 4.5%, 5%, and "Over 5%."

Well, you know where I stand. And I think it's blazingly typical of American craft beer that currently "Over 5%" has a commanding lead. Go vote, folks, go vote. I'm perfectly happy to drive traffic to this poll, because it does fuel the discussion!

  1. Hey Lew, thanks so much for talking about our poll. We love what you're doing here with the Session Beer Project! You nailed it right on the head, we're just trying to get the conversation going around session beer here in the U.S.

We're pretty on board with the 4.5%abv number that you and Chris Lohring over at Notch Session are advocating for. That said, no matter what people want to call it or where a line is, the big idea is just educating more about lower alcohol styles. For so long (and us included for a while) craft beer drinkers were looking for the biggest and baddest new thing. There definitely needs to be more options, though, that you can drink several pints of and still be clear headed. There's a serious gap in craft beer in this area, and we'd love to see it filled! While barleywines and imperial stouts are great, sometimes it's nice to have 3 beers and not be foggy headed.

We just want to see more demand for lower alcohol beers, and hopefully that will get more brewers producing them, leading to more low alcohol choices for all of us in bars and liquor stores!

    Cheers!

  2. Man that drives me crazy. How can anyone intentionally vote that their "cutoff" for session beer is OVER 5%? So 20%, 100% etc abv are in their definitions of session beer?

I would be genuinely interested to hear why people voted for that option. I suspect perhaps they were voting for their personal preference on abv and not necessarily on what they consider a session beer to be.

  3. Flagon of Ale,

I have a feeling that your right. The people who are voting the "over 5%" option, I think, don't quite understand the idea of session beer. They're interpreting it as a beer they like to drink a lot of.

I think it shows there's still a bit of headway we need to make in educating about low alcohol beer and session beer. But the good thing is the conversations are happening now, which is head and shoulder above where we were a year ago!

    Cheers!
